Byzantine Icon – Virgin Mary with Child & Archangels (Passion Symbols)

Adhering to traditional Byzantine iconography, this sacred icon is hand-made using silkscreen techniques and finished with gold leafing on a wooden base, reflecting the depth and reverence of Orthodox spiritual art.

The composition depicts the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child accompanied by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who present the Instruments of the Passion: the spear, cross, sponge, nails, and crown of thorns. These symbols foreshadow Christ’s sacrifice and are central to the icon’s theological meaning.

The original composition is attributed to the 15th-century hagiographer Andreas Ritzos, whose works are preserved in Patmos and Italy. A version of this icon is exhibited at the Byzantine Museum of Athens.
